I admit it, I am a fan of Penn and Teller. I think they are great comedians and magicians. I also generally agree with Penn's political views. Theologically, it is a much different story. Penn is a very outspoken atheist. Regardless of our theological differences, I have always respected Penn, because he always had logical well thought out arguments.About a year ago on a business trip, I was able to go to a Penn and Teller show in Las Vegas. It was a great show and we had a blast.
I have included below a video from Penn Jillette's video blog. Please watch this clip, because I believe it is one of the best examples of someone living missionally.
What an incredible clip. There is so much to talk about here, but the part that struck me the most is Penn Jillette understands Imago Dei better than most Christians. That is, he understands that we truly believe in heaven and hell and that we are made in God's image, how much would we have to hate someone not to tell them about Jesus.
I am also stuck by how the business man who gave Penn the bible clearly was living a missional life. He was on a business trip and went to Penn's show, just like I have done. But this man must have responded to the Spirit and went out of his way to approach someone who he probably knew he wouldn't respond, but he did it anyways.
This clip also gives me hope. That done properly we can make an impact on people. Penn Jillette didn't fall on his knees give his life to Jesus there on the spot, but this man certainly made an impression on him. He was genuine, honest and authentic. He didn't pass up an opportunity when he saw it. This is what it means to live missionally.
